Hier soir, en écoutant mon traditionnel podcast de
Revision3.com - Webdrifter, j'ai soudainement eu une révélation. Les gauchistes diront que je suis en retard, peut-être. Mais ça m'a soudainement frappé en pleine face.
Durant le show de l'excellent Martin Sargent, à propos d'un groupe de gens qui ont fait un site web farfelu sur le BigFoot, il a voulu faire un petit sketch humoristique. Le petit sketch était que Martin Sargent tirait ce qu'il croyait être le bigfoot avec son arme à feu, finalement ce n'était pas le vrai BigFoot mais un de ses confrère de travail déguisé.
Ce qui m'a accroché est la normalité avec laquelle il s'est retrouvé avec l'arme à la main pour faire une blague. Je ne sais pas si c'était une vraie arme, probablement que non, mais ça en avait tout l'air. C'est un comportement qu'on n'aurais jamais vu dans une émission au Canada, pas parce que ce n'est pas drôle ou autre, juste parce que ce n'est tellement pas naturel pour nous de cotoyer des armes, que ce scénario ne nous serait pas venu à l'esprit. Ou si quelqu'un y aurait pensé, ça aurait plutot été présenté avec une arme de chasse tel que les chasseurs au chevreuil/perdrix/orignaux portent, une arme à l'épaule, et non un petit "gun à main".
J'avais déjà remarqué cela dans certaines émissions de MythBusters, où assez souvent, ils font des tests avec des armes à feu de haut calibre non destinées à la chasse au chevreuil, mais plutot aux criminels et à l'armée. Tests pour attrapper 1 balle avec les dents, tests pour voir comment les balles ralentissent dans l'eau, test pour voir si une plaque de protection antiballe est suffisante, et j'en passe. Mais dans l'émission Mythbusters, ça revient souvent. Et hier l'épisode vécu dans l'émission WebDrifter m'a aussi marqué.
Ca n'explique pas grand chose, le nombre de tueries dans les écoles semble aussi courant ici que là-bas, et les criminels de rue qui le veulent vraiment se se tuent au couteau au lieu de fusils, mais se tuent quand même.
Je voulais juste apporter le point de la différence entre la vision canadienne et américaine sur la "normalité" de cotoyer des armes à feu.

Arnaque des cartouches d'encre (toner)
Il y a 6 mois, je me suis acheté 1 imprimante laser couleur à rabais, recondionnée au FutureShop. Il s'agit d'une Magicolor 5430 DL. Elle fonctionne très bien. Cependant, j'ai trouvé que l'encre descendait très vite. Effectivement, après juste 6 mois, surprise, je n'ai plus de noir !
J'avais payé l'imprimante environ $300. J'ai vérifié pour réacheter du nouveau toner, et bien, il se vend 175$ par cartouche ! donc $700 pour faire le plein complet !
J'ai trouvé sur Ebay un vendeur de poudre générique (vendeur "dol-auctions"). Il livre le produit du Canda (Montréal), donc pas de douane ni rien. Payé en US pas de taxe. Ca arrive dans un pot un peu tout croche, ça salit pas mal pour faire le plein (ça ira surement mieux la deuxième fois!), mais pour $40 au lieu de $175 j'ai fait le plein de mon réservoir de toner !
Donc n'hésitez pas, ça fonctionne, et ça fait sauver vraiment beaucoup d'argent !

Rions un peu avec notre ami Vista
Cet après-midi, chez un client, j'ai eu à faire une intervention surprise sur un poste de travail installé avec Windows Vista.
Environ 2 mois après l'achat d'un portable Toshiba flambant neuf, pré-installé avec Vista, durant une période de travail régulière sous Autocad, soudainement, Windows Vista a poppé une belle petite fenêtre disant que la version de Vista n'était plus active,
Il consédirait maintenant que c'était une version très louche, et qu'il fallait appeler pour la réactiver ! Normalement, il existe une activation "online", mais dans notre cas c'était inactif probablement dû au fait que notre version de Vista était tellement illégale. On a donc dû appeler au petit numéro de téléphone. Le système automatisé a bien pris tout notre numéro d'autorisation, mais rendu à la fin on a bien compris que notre version de Vista était encore une fois, trop pirate pour pouvoir être activée automatiquement. On a donc été transféré au centre d'appel, qui de toute évidence était en Inde vu l'accent anglais à l'autre bout. Après discussion, on a fini par accepter de réactiver notre license de Vista ! On a donc pu retourner à Autocad et continuer notre travail.
Encore une fois, Vista me donne envie d'être sévèrement malade !
Hey les jeunes, ne touchez JAMAIS à Microsoft Windows Vista, je ne le répèterai jamais assez souvent !

Remove Vista Install XP on HP Pavilion
I recently get a new HP Pavilion a6077c desktop machine.
It has great hardware, good video card, litescribe dvd writer, 2 gb memory, 400 gb hard drive, lot of USB connectors, and a TV-FM Tuner. Really fine.
But it came pre-installed with Windows Vista !
What a nightmare! It took 3 hours to boot (exagerated), when it finally finished booting, it took 2-3 secondes to start simple applications like internet explorer, and also 2-3 secondes to react when I close the application. The overall system is SO slow, and it is really not an hardware trouble, it's an OS trouble. So, the solution to make this beautiful hardware lightning fast was to remove Vista and install XP SP2.
Because I get a lot of trouble doing this, I provide you all the instructions on how to install Windows XP on a HP Pavilion PC with Vista preinstalled.
First of all, I want to tell you that I first contacted HP to do that, because they DO NOT provide any XP drivers for that machine on their support download web page. They gave me 2 or 3 suggestions that did not helped me. They told me to change the SerialATA emulation in the Bios, but the trouble was not the SerialATA emulation. The real trouble is that XP does not recognise this controller. So changing the emulation from SCSI to IDE does not help.
Detailed steps to do this.1. Do not install any update from windows update in Vista, or else you may get the trouble I have: Must reactivate the Vista license because Windows tells me that I changed my hardware and my vista is NO LONGER VALID !!!!
2. Boot in the pre-installed Vista. Go in the HP support program section, and run the Recovery Disk creator tool. It will write you 2 dvd-r disk that will allow you to reinstall Vista to its original HP content, for if you want to sell your machine one day, or if you want to get a headache or have a suddent need to vomit.
3. After that, you're ready to flush vista. Insert your bootable Windows XP CD in the drive, and reboot.
3.1 Start the XP setup. Surprise, XP do not see your hard drives ! It only lists you 4 strange drives (I think that these are the SD, MMC, MS card readers).
4. You need to get the SerialATA drivers and insert them in the setup process. The driver is for the device "intel matrix storage manager", that can be found on the
intel site, or with the copy I provide to you from
my page. To "unpack" the IMA file provided by Intel, I used MagicISO that helped me extract the file like a zip file. For those who don't want to install MagicISO juste for that take these
alreadly unpacked files.
5. Now that you have the SATA drivers, you can use them in the XP setup. But, this machine do not have any diskette reader, so you can't press F6 during setup and add drivers from the floppy. So, you will have to integrate these drivers in the setup on the CD. To do that, I discovered a very useful utility, called
Nlite. Download it, copy your XP setup cd to your hard drive, follow the nlite wizard to add the drivers to the setup, and use Nlite to burn your new XP Setup. You can also pre-configure your XP setup with nlite, like integrate the CD Key, or choose the keyboard / language, and other settings. Nlite is a very wonder utility, and it's free.
6. You have your new Bootable XP Setup CD, you can restart the XP setup. Wonderful, you see the hard drive ! Remove the actual partitions (1 partition is the Vista, the other is the recovery files that you wrote to the dvd-r on the first steps, you no longer need them. Remove all currently installed partitions, and configure your new XP ntfs partition like normal.
7. You have installed XP, you're so happy. Now, let's go to the Internet to download some windows updates and drivers. What? the network card is not working ? is the network card too new to be discovered by XP? No, it's a very old chipset, but that have never been detected by XP. It's an Intel Pro100 VE, so you can
download this driver.
8. For the other drivers that you have to install, you can see in the device manager that you have a lot of unknown devices. Modem, Network, Audio, and even VIDEO because the Nvidia card is not detected by XP.
9. I learned something very interresting during this process. To find which drivers to install for other devices, I learned how to identify my device with the PCI id. Go to the device manager. Select property on any device (for example the unknow multimedia device). In the DEtails tab, you see a PCI id, like this: "PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_165E..." This is how XP can know that a card is for example a Sound Blaster PCI512 device.
With this information. go to this site:
http://www.driveragent.com/. I used this site to identify all my devices. This site has an inventory of all VendorID and DeviceID. So, for my exemple, I can go to
http://listing.driveragent.com/pci/14e4/165e and I see that vendor 14e4 is the company Broadcom, and device id 165e is associated with NetExtreme Gigabit (this example is from my notebook, not associated with the HP Pavilion devices).
10. Find all other drivers, run the driveragent utililty to be sure that you get all the most up-to-date drivers.
11. Enjoy your new lightning fast HP Pavilion desktop, that was so slow with Vista, and that is now so fast with XP!
12. Send an e-mail to HP to tell them that, even if they provide VISTA built in the machine, they can support XP too with their downloads page and help us downloading the drivers.
These are the drivers I get to make my Pavilion work fine under XP.

Vista - La suite
Le nouvel outil d'indexation et de recherche des fichiers de Vista est une vraie merveille.
Dans mon répertoire c:\mp3\rip, j'avais 4 cd rippés donc environ 30-40 mp3. J'ai tenté de quoi d'impossible: Recherche de répertoire, *.mp3.
Il m'a sorti 3500 résultats ! Vive Vista, il prense que ce que j'ai supprimé il y a plus d'un mois est toujours présent dans le répertoire.
Bravo Microsoft. Et j'ai tu hâte d'avoir le temps à perdre requis pour remettre XP et ne plus jamais avoir à vomir sur Vista !

Logo de compagnie
Je viens accidentellement de tomber sur le logo de A&W américain. Il est, disons, légèrement différent du logo canadien, car si il était identique, ça n'aurait jamais marché ici !

Un mac ça plante pas...
J'ai un appareil Apple, je n'aurais jamais cru que ça arriverait.
Un Apple Ipod Classic, 80 gig.
Enfin, tous mes cd sont sur 1 seul appareil. Fini le taponnage de mettre mes albums sur des cd pour l'auto, ou sur une petite carte 2 gig, tout est là.
Parfait le ipod ? Il pourrait l'être.
Cependant, il plante au moins une fois par semaine ! Parfois il s'éteint soudainement. En le réallumant, je dois tout reconfigurer mes options (choix de menu). Je me suis tanné, après une bonne dizaine de reconfiguration du menu, je le laisse sur le menu par défaut.
Aussi, voulez-vous des accessoires ? l'adapteur officiel Apple pour tranformer le courant du mur en courant USB pour recharger l'appareil se vend $50 ! Quand on peut avoir un HUB usb qui fait la même job pour $15!
Ensuite, le logiciel. On est obligé d'utiliser itunes pour le moment (il existe des clones, mais pas encore compatible iPod Classic, 6e génération). Itunes est surement bon pour les gens qui ont 22 CD et un ipod 1 gig. Mais avec 600 CD et près de 60 gig à synchroniser, dès que je me branche, je ne peut plus toucher au logiciel pour au moins 5 minutes ! Il gèle, l'interface ne répond plus, je ne peux presque plus toucher à la souris. Il manque vraiment de qualité pour le support de grande quantité d'information.
Mais en général à part ces quelques irritants, j'aime beaucoup l'appareil.
